Remembering Christmas…

In the shadow of the cross…

…Christ

Jesus

was born

to save us

from

our sins!

… an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, … take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.  And she will bring forth a Son and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21b

Now there were in the same country shepherds  living out in the fields,  keeping watch over their flock by night.  And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.  Then the  angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord…

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who was born King of the Jews?  For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” … When they had heard the king, they departed and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them till it came and stood over where the young Child was.  When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.  And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him.  And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him:  gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Son of man came … to give His life a ransom for many.  Mark 10:45

For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:17

To as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe in His name; who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man but born (again) of God. John 1:12-13 (See John 3:3,5).

What will YOU do with this Jesus?

HAVE A BLESSED AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

My Review:

Twelve years ago, Megan Cash testified against Norman Fowler, a criminal that held her hostage during a bank robbery where she worked.  He’s served his sentence and is now free to get the revenge he promised. Now a single mom of a critically-ill daughter, Ella, she is once again terrorized by this man, the first being his presence at her daughter’s hospital room.  Since no one else saw him, and she has no evidence of his threats, the police are hard-pressed to provide police protection for her or her home.

Widowed, ex-FBI agent, a former love interest of Megan’s, Reid Morgan happens to be at the hospital with his daughter, Jessie, and their therapy dog.  Upon hearing the commotion, he assists Megan and makes a phone call to the police.  When they wouldn’t provide protection, he called his old partner, Jack Duger, to help apprehend the perpetrator.  To complicate the issue, there’s the love/hate relationship Megan has for Reid Morgan, a man she doesn’t feel she can’t trust, as he’s run out on her before.  Has he changed?  Will he run?  That is Megan’s dilemma. But he’s the only one who believes she’s in danger.

In her book, The Christmas Witness, Susan Sleeman has once again created another riveting, spine-tingling, suspenseful romance.   The action rumbles forth from the first page to the end.  Between Norman’s threats, Ella’s health issues, and no place for Megan to go, Susan brings about mind-boggling twists and plots.   It seems that wherever Megan goes, Norman always seems to be one step ahead.

One usually thinks of Christmas as a joyous, generally quiet time to reflect on God’s gift to us.  Not so for Megan and Ella.  They are in a dangerous situation, where the suspect is trying to make sure she doesn’t live to enjoy it.

I really appreciated Megan’s devotion to keep her daughter safe at all costs.  Her husband ran out on her when Ella got sick with cancer, but Megan’s devotion is admirable.  Such devotion is a heart-warming quality that I admire.

Susan’s Scripture choice fits perfectly with the storyline–For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future, Jeremiah 29:11.   It’s just that we have to realize that His thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are our ways His ways, Isaiah 55:8.    That’s where we can get into trouble if we don’t learn to trust Him.  He knows what He is doing, even when everything seems to be falling apart.  And fall apart they do for Megan.

I’ve read several of Susan’s books, and I’ve loved every one of them.  I can hardly wait for the next two coming out in 2012!  If you haven’t read them yet, you’re in for wonderful surprise.

This book was provided by Susan Sleeman in exchange for my honest opinion.  No monetary compensation was exchanged.

My Review:

Miriam Nelson, who lives on a small ranch along the Arizona border with her son, Davey, and mother, Carolyn, has turned her back on her faith because God allowed her husband, David, a border-patrol agent, to be killed by drug smugglers crossing the border.

Isabella and Francisco Alcantara leave Ensenada, Mexico, with the financial help of her grandfather, Don Alfredo.  Isabella’s parents and siblings had been shot to death by a vicious, unprovoked drive-by shooting.  As more shootings continue to occur, Don Alfredo wants his granddaughter, who is seven-months pregnant, to leave for the U.S. with her husband through the aid of a ‘coyote.’  However, the ‘coyote’ absconds with the money, leaving them stranded in the desert.

Kathi weaves an authentic story of the hardships and difficulties that Isabella and Francisco encounter en-route to the U. S., crossing through an unknown desert for days on end.  Their fears, hunger and thirst are palpable as they run out of food and hide from any source of harm.  One can ‘taste’ the dusty sand, ‘feel’ the empty stomachs and excessive heat by day and cold by night, and ‘cower’ with them as they seek shelter at night.

A thought that came to me while thinking about Kathi’s book (while in church), is whether we will follow the Lord despite the fact that circumstances aren’t working out to our expectations.  God is sovereign.  He knows what is going on. He knows what He is doing. Do we trust Him?  It’s a question we all have to ask ourselves, and Kathi brought this out very distinctly in her book.

In A Christmas Journey Home, Isabella and Miriam both have to decide how they will respond to their predicaments.  One is driven by fear and a promise, while the other by bitterness and revenge.   It’s Christmas Eve, and God will use whatever or whoever is available to bind them together.  Will they be able to face their personal losses, set aside their distrustful feelings, and ultimately reconcile their differences?

Come read this difficult yet sensitive book, and see what God speaks to you about.  There’s a message for each of us.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for posting the author’s interview on my blog. This blog tour is managed by Christian Speakers Services.  No monetary compensation was exchanged for my review.

A Christmas Journey Home: A Miracle in the Manger

YouTube video of A Christmas Journey Home:

A Christmas Journey Home Interview with Kathi Macias:

How did you come up with the idea for A Christmas Journey Home?

I knew I wanted to do a Christmas book—the first of what would become an annual event that my publisher and I were discussing—and I also knew that despite the lighter tone required in a Christmas book (as opposed to the darker themes of the persecuted Church and human trafficking, which I’ve been writing about), I had to stick to my “brand” as closely as possible: hence, an “issues-related” Christmas novel, dealing with the issues related to illegal immigration.

What was your favorite scene to write in A Christmas Journey Home?

I loved writing this entire book, and the characters are delightful (except the villains, of course!), so I loved almost all the scenes. But I think I liked the scenes with Isabella’s old abuelo best, as the grandfather reminded me of my own grandpa and even my dad, both of whom I loved dearly. I love incorporating at least one elderly saint in each of my books, and in this one I decided on a man since most of the other books have had women as the elderly, praying characters. I also brought in a little boy because children can add such a delightful element to any story, and six-year-old Davey certainly does that in A Christmas Journey Home.

What was the most difficult scene, and why?

The toughest scene had to be when Francisco and Isabella thought they were finally on the verge of being able to get away from the migrant camp and find a small home of their own, where their baby could be born in relative comfort and safety. If you’ve read the book, you know that isn’t at all what happens. But this heartbreaking scene had to take place to bring the story to its miraculous conclusion.

What is there about you, apart from writing, that many people don’t know?

First, my “road name” is “Easy Writer” because my husband and I were Harley riders for many years. (We’ve traded the bike in on a 2005 Corvette, so I’m still “Easy Writer” but in comfort now!) Also, I served on staff at a large Southern California church for several years, training small group leaders and doing biblical counseling, among other things.

Who are some of your favorite writers, and are you an avid reader?

Absolutely I’m an avid reader! I have always loved books/reading/words and been fascinated by them. When I ran out of books as I child, I started writing my own. (Voila! Look what came of that!) As for favorite writers, that’s tough, but here are just a few: Brock and Bodie Thoene, Francine Rivers, Patti Lacy, Athol Dickson, Jim Rubart, and Alan Paton, who wrote my favorite all-time fiction book, Cry the Beloved Country. That book changed my life and inspired my novel set in South Africa in 1989, No Greater Love. I also enjoy reading Brennan Manning, Jennifer Kennedy Dean, Oswald Chambers, and Max Lucado for nonfiction.

What’s on the horizon for you now, so far as future book projects?

I am currently finishing up the final book of the three-installment Freedom series (Deliver Me From Evil, Special Delivery, and The Deliverer). Then I will jump into my Christmas 2012 novel (working title is A Home For Christmas) and a novel called Last Chance for Justice, which is part of the multi-author Bloomfield Series with another publisher. After that I hope to get going on a new fiction series, which is still in the discussion/planning stages with my publisher and agent. So life is busy, but most contracts coming my way seem to be fiction right now. I am also keeping busy with very occasional editing projects and some speaking/teaching around the country.

Where can we find out more about you, The Freedom Series, and keep up with your to-be-released books?

Please feel free to visit my website at www.KathiMacias.com.

Litfuse Blog Tour and Giveaway (with review): A Lancaster County Christmas” by Suzanne Woods Fisher

A Story of Hope and Renewal as Two World Collide at Christmastime!

Jaime and C. J. Fitzpatrick began their married life as most couples do–in love and looking forward to a bright future together. But four years later they’ve drifted apart and are almost ready to call it quits.

Mattie Riehl was hoping to give her husband Sol the Christmas gift they have both longed for–news that a baby was on the way. But as usual, she is disappointed. The holidays bring an acute awareness to Mattie that her dream of a big family isn’t likely to become a reality.

Then a winter storm raging outside blows the Fitzpatricks into the Riehl home–and into a much slower pace of life. Can these two couples from different worlds help each other understand the true meaning of love this Christmas?

With her trademark plot twists and attention to detail, Suzanne Woods Fisher offers readers a beautiful Christmas story of love, forgiveness, and what truly matters in life.

Suzanne’s interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, W.D. Benedict, who was raised Plain. She has many, many Plain relatives living in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and travels back to Pennsylvania, as well as to Ohio, a couple of times each year for research.

Suzanne has a great admiration for the Plain people and believes they provide wonderful examples to the world.  In both her fiction and non-fiction books, she has an underlying theme: You don’t have to “go Amish” to incorporate many of their principles–simplicity, living with less, appreciating nature, forgiving others more readily– into your life.

When Suzanne isn’t writing or bragging to her friends about her first new grandbaby (!), she is raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. To Suzanne’s way of thinking, you just can’t take life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone’s underwear in its mouth.

Suzanne can be found on-line at: www.suzannewoodsfisher.com.

My Review:

Sol and Mattie Riehl are hoping to hear the good news of a new arrival to the family, while Jaime and C.J. Fitzpatrick were leaving town to meet her long-absent father for a Christmas cruise, and who had a surprise for Jaime.

Jaime and Mattie, with her precocious six-and-a-half-year-old son, Danny, became acquainted at the doctor’s office.  As Jaime is leaving the doctor’s office, the doctor asks if she could return Danny’s whistle before Christmas.  Before leaving to her father’s for a Christmas cruise, Jaime, C.J., and Tucker, their dog, make the trip out to the Amish farm.

Shortly after their arrival at the Amish farm,  Suzanne Woods Fisher, in her book, A Lancaster County Christmas, takes us on a humorous, dangerous, life-changing, and heart-warming trip.  Not one, but two back-to-back major winter blizzards hustle the Fitzpatricks into the Riehl’s home on Christmas eve for an unknown time frame.  For those who haven’t lived through a blizzard, Suzanne is very accurate in her appraisal of the weather!

Suzanne, in her typical, heart-warming writing style, spins a story that will resonate in your own life, as each of the characters must come to terms with their own personal disappointments and failures that will change the lives of all involved at the Riehl’s home. The camaraderie between Danny and Jaime brings out a side of Jaime that even she didn’t know she had.

I truly enjoyed the story on many levels–the humorous, dangerous,  life-changing, and heartwarming–which you will experience as you read the story.  I do believe it’s a Christmas story that could change your life, also!  Definitely a Divine encounter.

This book was provided by Amy Lathrop of Litfuse publicity Group in exchange for my review and presentation of the giveaway.  No monetary compensation was exchanged.
