About the Book: After an extended stay in Montana, where Amish traditions are different from  her home state, Marianna Sommer returns to Indiana for two reasons, first to help her brother and his girlfriend prepare for a baby and their wedding. Second, to plan her own wedding to Aaron Zook — a marriage she’s been dreaming about ever since childhood. And yet, although she had missed the idyllic farms and families of her upbringing, Marianna is surprised that Indiana is somehow making her long now for Montana. As months pass, secrets that were hidden in winter’s frozen grasp thaw and take on a life of their own. The truths about a child, about a past relationship, and about God’s plans are being revealed. Walking through a valley of questions, Marianna must hold on to hope as she decides where and with whom her heart truly belongs.
My Review:

Get ready for a heart-pounding rush of emotions as Marianna returns to Pennsylvania with the love of her life, Aaron Zook.  Her mother had invited him to Montana to steer her away from Ben Stone, an Englisch man from the area. Upon arrival, Aaron was in a car accident, and ended up recuperating at the home of Marianna’s parents.

After spending time with Aaron there, Marianna chooses to marry Aaron, her childhood love.  They hope for a quick wedding once her brother Levi and Naomi are wed. What they find is Naomi pregnant before marriage.  Marianna and Aaron’s hopes of a quick marriage come to a halt, at least until Naomi’s baby is born, and Levi and Naomi are allowed to marry.

As Marianna is courted by Aaron, strange behaviors and attitudes shoot forth from Aaron, something Marianna hasn’t ever seen before.  Surely it’s because they have been apart for so long. Right?

As secrets and rumors are exposed, a whole new dilemma occurs, sending Marianna into upheaval.  The return of her parents for Levi and Naomi’s wedding stirs up additional rumors and innuendos, as Ben is with them with a large trailer.

Trisha’s characters are real, deep and complex, and the emotional roller coaster rides in Beyond Hope’s Valley are real, difficult and exhaustive.  Trisha really digs into the meat of the issues and they are presented in a way that she truly masters.  Twists and turns keep you wondering how anything can work out. Love is tested.  Suspicions reign. The storyline keeps the pages turning!

Having given her heart to the Lord in Montana, Trisha has Marianna traveling the fine line of Pennsylvania Amish life and truly following the Lord.  Her exuberance in sharing her newfound joy isn’t always accepted, though the Amish ways are delicately woven in her life. With this rejection, Trisha brings out the travesties of Marianna’s friends back in Pennsylvania.

You will want to read Beside Still Waters and Along Wooded Paths to get a better feeling for the angst in Beyond Hope’s Valley.  Trisha has written books in several genres, and I’ve loved them all.  These included.  You won’t be disappointed with her Montana Big Sky Amish series!

“I love it when I get lost in a good book, and Chasing Mona Lisa kept me enthralled from start to finish.”–Debra McCoy, mother of Cleveland Browns quarterback, Colt McCoy

My Review:

It’s August, 1944.  France is on the verge of liberation. Allied forces are advancing, while the Third Reich flees.  Though Germany is retreating, Reichsmarchall Hermann Goring wants to steal the most precious painting of France–the Mono Lisa–a symbol of their freedom.  The race is on between the Swiss OSS agents Gabi Mueller and Eric Hofstadler against Colonel Heller’s henchman.

It was while Gabi and Eric were still fighting off stragglers from the Third Reich in France, alongside Bernard Rousseau of the Communist-run Resistance Group, that they were all informed by Allen Dulles of the OSS of the attempted heist of the Mona Lisa.  Working through Collette, a curator of the Louvre of France, they hatched out a plan to retrieve and protect the Mona Lisa.  Woven through these plans were the behind-the-scenes suspicions of Collette’s innocence or guilt in collaborating with the Germans.

Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey give us a hit-and-run twist of plots from the very first page to the end.  The evil of the Third Reich and their underhanded methods of torture are exposed.  Man’s inhumanity of unbelievable proportion. It’s real and it’s horrific.  Your heart breaks over threats to even young children. You feel the fear of the characters as they go through the fearsome episodes. You find yourself holding your breath during the scenes of severity and tough demands in the Swiss Chateau.

Throughout the story Gabi and Eric prayed and put their trust in the Lord to get them through the dangerous circumstances and to save the precious Mona Lisa for France.  Their heroism and loyalty went above and beyond their roles.

For a historical, fast-paced adventure, with a little romance thrown in, this is a book you will not want to miss.  There are so many individual stories that have been told and still need to be told.  But Chasing Mona Lisa triumphs the liberation of France and the hopeful claim of the Mona Lisa.  It’s another part of WWII history that I found very interesting.

Litfuse Blog Tour (with Review): “Remembering You” by Tricia Goyer

Haunting Memories… or… A Bright New Future

35-year-old Ava Andrews’ dream job is interrupted by an unusual request–fulfill her 84-year-old grandfather’s last wish by joining him on a battle site tour of Europe. Ava is sure her boss will refuse her request. But, instead, he gives her a directive of his own–to videotape the tour and send it back as mini-segments for the show she produces.

As if juggling these two things isn’t hard enough, Ava is soon surprised again … twice. First, Ava and Grandpa Jack arrive in Europe, only to discover the tour is cancelled. Unwilling to let down her grandfather or her boss, Ava and Grandpa Jack head out on their own. Then, while they’re on their way, the pair soon meet up with Paul, her grandpa’s best friend, and his grandson Dennis. The same Dennis who just happens to be Ava’s first love.

Before she knows it, Ava and Dennis are swept down memory lane as they visit the sites that are discussed in the history books. And even though Ava’s videotaping old soldiers, she can see their youth, their hopes and fears, and their pride in their eyes. Soon Ava learns the trip isn’t just for them … it’s for her too–especially for her heart.

My Review:

As  head producer of Mornings with Laurie and Clark, Seattle’s top news show, Ava Ellington knows her position is tentative as the ratings were slipping.  When her mother calls to ask her to assist her Grandpa Jack (Jackson Andrews) on a WWII battle site tour, as she had broken her leg, Ava sees a chance to break down the barriers between her and her Grandpa.

Ava runs the idea past her boss, and he suggests that she videotape the tour for mini-segments for the show.  But Ava will have to be reminded over and over that this tour is for the healing of her grandpa and not a TV special.

Grand-Paul (Paul Prichard), a close friend of Grandpa Jack, was also going, under the care of his grandson, Dennis, Ava’s first love from fifteen years earlier.

Upon arrival in Paris, they find the tour cancelled due to the tour guide’s accident in Northern Africa.   Both men want to continue the tour, so Ava and Dennis accommodate them. The mystery parts Ava wants to know about is Angeline and Chenogne, the two things Grandpa Jack has kept secret from Ava.  The tour ends with a memorial service at the Mauthausen concentration camp.

Tricia weaves the tender story of two elderly ex-soldiers from the same Infantry Division who want to reminisce and make amends stemming back from their haunting actions and memories from WWII, particularly Grandpa Jack with Angeline and Chenogne.  The heartfelt emotions of the characters tear at your own heart as you hear the story unfold.  The interactions between Grandpa Jack and Ava the TV host and Ava the granddaughter evolve in such a way that it heals your heart.  The sights and scenes bring both sorrow and joy to the two friends.  It’s a trip that is both agonizing and freeing.  One that’s  filled with hope and faith that reaches the most unlikely characters.

Woven amongst the WWII tour memories, there’s an on-again, off-again romance between Ava and Dennis.  Their goals had separated them fifteen years ago.  Ava also has the complication of an ex-fiance who wants her back.  Would she have to choose?  Would their goals continue to separate them?  Especially when Ave and Dennis are again separated at the end of the tour.

Being so close to Veteran’s day, it’s a time to remember and give thanks to all the soldiers and their families for the sacrifices they made on our behalf.  Thanks also to Tricia for sharing these memories with us in novel format.

Since I read this book, my husband and I got to meet a gentleman, who served in Northern Africa during WWII, and his wife.   Applebees restaurant gives a free meal to veterans on Veterans’ Day here, and we were talking with this couple until our booth was available.  We asked them to share the booth with us.  It was exciting to meet a WWII veteran and his wife.  They were in their late 80′s.  Now I understand Tricia Goyer’s joy in sharing their stories.

“Beside Still Waters: A Big Sky Novel” by Tricia Goyer

Will She Ever Be Free of The Past?

Beside Still Waters by Tricia Goyer/BHPublishing Group/ISBN: 978-13336-6868-5/300 pages/Softcover/$14.99

Book Blurb:

On the night Marianna Sommers was born, a freak accident shattered her family.  Even as she came into the world, her two sisters left it for heaven.  She’s spent her life making up for that loss, being to her family and their Indiana Amish community all that her sisters would have been.  Her only dream:  a simple life married to Aaron Zook, the one she’s loved since childhood.  Then her father says they are moving–to Montana, of all places!  Of course it’s to keep her younger siblings far from their oldest brother, Levi, who left the Amish way of life, but the move will destroy Marianna’s dream.  She pleads to stay, to no avail.  As Marianna leaves her home–and Aaron–she’s sure her heart will never heal.

But Montana holds surprises.

The mountains, trees, and still waters open Marianna’s heart to God as never before.  Still, it troubles her that the small Amish community is so interwoven with their Englisch neighbors.  Especially woodworker, Ben Stone.  If only Ben didn’t do everything right!  He’s there in times of need, and his love for God is so clear.  But giving in to the feeling he stirs in her would carry a terrible cost…everything she believes in and loves.

See the book trailer here.

Watch Tricia Goyer’s Beside Still Waters interview here.

Tricia Goyer is the winner of two American Christian Fiction Writers’ Book of the Year Awards (Night Song and Dawn of a Thousand Nights), co-author of 3:16 Teen Edition with Max Lucado, and a contributor to the Women of Faith Study Bible.  Also a noted writer of numerous books and articles on marriage and parenting, she lives with her husband and children in Arkansas, formerly from Montana.  She can be found at TriciaGoyer.com.

Endorsements:

“Tricia Goyer brings her considerable writing talent to the Amish genre.  Beside Still Waters is a sweet, tender tale that’s sure to please readers.  Amish fiction fans will be wanting more from Ms. Goyer!”–Kathleen Fuller, Author of A Hand to Hold and The Secrets Beneath.

“Only a gifted writer like Tricia Goyer could present such a captivating story about a group of Amish forging a new community in Montana.  Tricia writes in such a way that the reader can’t wait to turn the page and learn more about main character Marianna’s experience.  Tricia’s talent for connecting our heart to Marianna’s plight also connects us to our need for one another.  Beside Still Waters draws you in with its genuine characters, and it holds you there with its enduring bonds of love and family.”  –Suzanne Woods Fisher, best-selling author of the Lancaster County Series.

“The inspired pen of talented author Tricia Goyer has done it again–brought to life characters and events that tug at our hearts and transport us to faraway places and times.  From the tragic accident that snags us at the book’s opening in the otherwise peaceful Amish setting of Indiana to the wild, big-sky country of Montana, we travel with Marianna as she searches for love and acceptance in much the same way we all do.  And in the midst of it, we are reminded that sometimes we find what we didn’t even realize we were searching for.”  — Kathi Macias, award-winning author of more than thirty books, including the popular Extreme Devotions series.

My Review:

Marianna Sommers was born on the night her two sisters, Mariann and Joanna, left earth for heaven.  A freak accident shattered her family, and she spent her life trying to make up for the loss of her sisters, always feeling that she falls short her mother’s love.  She had one simple dream:  marry Aaron Zook, the one man she’s loved since childhood, and raise a family of her own in Indiana.

Her father’s desire to move to Montana, however, left Marianna in a bind–obedience to her family or staying in Indiana so she could marry Aaron. Choosing obedience, little did she know the multitude of changes that would come with the move to Montana. The locale was a stark difference to Indiana, with the majestic mountains, the numerous trees, and the still waters, all of which beckoned her to God in a way she had never known.

Then there was Ben Stone.  An Englisch man who was  a woodworker and musician, with a heart that accepted everyone.  But he is ‘forbidden’…

Having read several WWII books by Tricia, I know her to be an exquisite writer, with depth and detail in her writing.  She has carried this over into her Amish book, Beside Still Waters.  She has warm, inviting characters that demonstrate the Amish way of life.  The devastating and trying circumstances are so real-to-life that your heart weeps and rejoices along with the characters.  You are also made aware of the strong family bonds of the Amish, as well as the shunning that takes place.

Her vivid descriptions come alive in your mind, whisking you away to the magnificent mountainous regions of Montana and a whole new way of life!  The conflicts within Marianna are clearly exposed, especially her feelings for Ben and the intermingling of the Englisch and Amish.  Is she the only one in the family that feels the tension?  Will she remain in Montana and possibly lose Aaron?

I love reading Amish books from all different authors, as you get a unique outlook with each writer.  The same is true with Tricia.  My most favorite characters in this book are Marianna and Ben.  The intensity of their lives grab your heartstrings and squeeze, but for different reasons.

The only negative was the ending, which left me wondering Marianna’s choice for a husband.  Guess that leaves us with a sequel!
