KCWC Book Review: “Surrendered Sleep” by Charles W. Page, M.D.

While Facing Sleep Disorders and Insomnia,

Turn Your Heart to God

ISBN: 9780983136105/Paperback, 187 pages/Camino Real Publishers

Surrendered Sleep approaches insomnia from a biblical perspective and exposes several heart attitudes you may experience in your journey for rest. These attitudes may not only affect the way you sleep but also the way you relate to God. Dr. Page will challenge you to wrap your mind around the concept of a God who is just as active during your sleep—or sleeplessness as during your wakeful hours.

Surrendered Sleep empowers readers with tools to:

  • Understand the association of an active pursuit of God with refreshing sleep
  • Be more aware of God’s activity as one lays down for rest
  • Recognize strategies and habits that wisely predispose to a good night’s sleep
  • Effectively battle thoughts, concerns and attitudes that potentially hinder sleep
  • Integrate a personal approach to health care and the Christian faith
  • Recognize common sleep disorders and their role in our health
  • Approach chronic insomnia and sleep disorders with a heart of endurance
  • Sacrifice our sleep in order to serve others and further God’s kingdom

Charles Page, a sleep-deprived surgeon and father of five, leads readers to turn their hearts to God while facing sleep disorders and insomnia.

My Review:

Dr. Charles W.  Page, in Surrendered Sleep, gives a thorough Scriptural perspective on the issues of sleep disorders, insomnia, and interrupted sleep.  He leads us to the Lord of sleep, His possible purposes of interrupted sleep, and helps us to understand and appropriate some of the ways we look at sleep.

Dr. Page dissects the assumption that, as Christians, we are guaranteed a solid night’s sleep every night.  He challenges the way we look at our:

  • ways of living
  • our priorities
  • our daily pursuit of God
  • our relationships with God and others
  • our work load
  • our financial choices
  • daily physical activity and diet
  • a proactive approach to health,

and how these areas affect our sleep.

Then we get to choose what type of heart we want to lead our lives:

  • A responsive heart
  • A disobedient heart
  • A servant’s heart
  • A separated heart
  • An enduring heart

I chose this book because I suffer from chronic sleep issues, and wanted to read about new methods to try to overcome them.  Instead, Dr. Page showed me much more about sleep issues that I need to look at.  This is not a how-to book, but it certainly makes you look at the issues behind your sleeping problems.  Also, on most pages, he has distinct questions to help you decipher where your problem(s) lie.  He challenges you to seek God for the answer through a deeper relationship with Him, and allowing Him to use your sleeplessness for His purpose.  After all, God is the Lord of sleep.
