Author Ashley Dawn was born and raised in rural Arkansas where she developed her love for writing while helping in her parent’s office. She graduated with an accounting degree from the University of Central Arkansas but is currently working as a legal assistant.
Ashley has been writing professionally for the past seven years and “Shadows of Pain” is her third published books. Her first book, “Shadows From The Past”, was originally published by Tate Publishing and is considered more of a traditionally published book while the second, “Shadows of Suspicion”, was published by self publication using AuthorHouse. She is currently working on multiple projects including a standalone mystery about a serial killer that remains untitled.
Ashley also has a review blog to share her love of reading, Ashley’s Bookshelf, where she reads and reviews books of all genres (http://ashleysbookshelf.blogspot.com) She and her family make their home in Texas.
Kerry Reiley has just arrived home after two weeks off for Christmas, a wedding, and vacation from teaching. Her brother Jordan got married to her best friend Aurora Kavvan on New Year’s Day.
Just as she attempts to call her mom and let her know she got home safe, a hand slips around her mouth. As she’s about to scream, a cloth with a sweet smell covers her mouth, and things go black. Kidnapped, she awakens in a cabin high up in the Colorado Mountains with Christopher Deveraux and Jim. Chris wants his dad released from prison before he’s willing to let her go.
Though Jordan is on his honeymoon, he and Aurora return home to gather with the family at the home farm to plan her rescue, as Jordan was responsible for putting Charles Deveraux in prison. Rick suggests Luke Reeding, an agent with unknown ties, who was once saved by Rick and owes him one. Luke agrees. Little does Rick know of his desire to get to know Kerry. Though the danger is high, the romance is hot and complicated!
Ashley again does an excellent job of meshing the characters together into another exciting suspense. The tension from the kidnapping is palpable, and the rescue plan is dangerous, and the love angle is tenuous partially due to some very overprotective brothers! The latter part is what makes the story so funny in some ways. However, in my own mind, the brothers are more than a bit much!
The give-and-take love play between Luke and Kerry is so real. They ‘made the story.’ Luke didn’t feel his background made him a marriageable partner for Kerry. I think this is something that happens in many relationships. Part of the reason was that faith and trust in the Lord was a way of life for the Reiley family. It became a hot topic for Luke because of his father. He needed to reconcile his ambivalence towards the Lord to feel comfortable in his shoes and to become equally yoked with Kerry if their relationship blossomed that far.
I did have a problem with sentence structure throughout the book, and one whole page that was difficult to understand what was happening. It’s possible this is an advance reader copy and just needs some editing.
