My Review:

Acacia has written a very transparent story of her life.  The desire to be married before she got too old and the warnings against this marriage.  It’s a matter of listening to God or your own desires.  The consequences of her choice echoes down the hall of her life.  Her story is a lesson we all need to heed in all the decisions of life.

Her compassion and forgiveness toward her husband is clearly displayed, but he must ultimately make a choice as well.  His choices bring about the dilemmas she must face.

Despite all Acacia goes through, God’s word for her life helps her overcome her multiple difficulties, but not without consequences.  Before you marry, please read this book and learn to follow God’s voice and warnings He gives through others in your life.  Do not let the serpent beguile you.

CSS Blog Tour: “YOU ARE LOVED!” by Linda Gomes

April 4-16, 2011

In this sensitive, insightful book, Linda Gomes shares her story. With disarming honesty, she tells of building new foundations from the ashes of an abusive childhood. She has helped many people come to terms with the pain of their past, encouraging them to redirect their energy into healthy productive channels, and assuring them that “You Are Loved!”

Linda Gomes has been a life coach and motivational speaker for more than 15 years. She has a strong background in Physical Fitness and a faith and belief that God has created her and restored her life to be used for His purpose. She has brought many women through the trials of relational loss, self worthlessness, hopelessness, devastating illness, extreme weight gain, weight loss, and spiritual deprivation. She has published her own life story in a gripping and alarmingly honest book called You Are Loved! in order to help women realize that they are not alone and that they are not the sum total of their history! She believes and has found through the healing power of prayer that there are answers beyond the explanations of our past. An amazing lesson in trust and faith, You are Loved! is about learning how to live and not just survive. Helping you to realize the struggle with authority is the wall between you and God when you are “just” surviving. Linda walks you step-by-step through amazing platforms of faith in order to build the trust and renew your hope and love for God.

Linda founded EMBRACE-Ministries.net in 2008. It is dedicated to women of abuse, single women and single moms who are searching for a place of support, love, and life tools to help them get to the purpose of what God intended their lives to be. Through this ministry she has continued to write and reach out with “Monday Morning Prayer,” a weekly devotional that tackles today’s trials with the tools of His word.

Linda is a  proud mother of two beautiful girls. She lives in the San Francisco Bay area and continues to teach, write, and fully embrace the precious life that God has gifted her.

Embrace Ministries can be found here.

“Linda’s personal testimony about sorting through the deep hurt and clutter of live, learning to rely on the Lord, and growing in the process has become a source of inspiration and ministry to hurting women.  If you have been hurt or know someone who has, Linda’s story will provide a journey of healing.”  –Pastor Dave Matas

“Linda’s transparent account of the darkest times in her life and her journey to faith encourage all of us to realize that nothing in this world can keep us from the Love of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  By turning our past over to Him, we allow Him to transform us, and to fulfill His purpose for our lives.”  –Susan Zarringar

“We are so blessed that you were inspired to write this book.  Your words speak truth and reach into our hearts to show us the way to tackle the tough issues with love and grace.A”  –Pat Moorehead

Interview with Linda:
What inspired you to write You Are Loved? And was there a pivotal point that changed your life?

My life and its past had always been a burden to me.  I tried to hide it, lie about it and pretend that I was just as “normal” as everyone else until I realized that my faithful life was being affected by not being myself! I made a decision to become a part of a class at my church called Wounded Hearts that was lead by the most amazing woman!  (You can read more about her in dedication of my book) after several hours of being a part of this group I was encouraged to write or journal and  that lead to asking for prayer and writing Monday Morning Prayer which I emailed to my friends.  It was very well received, much to my surprise as I never thought of myself as a writer!  Then one day I was thrust into a trial that I had no frame of reference to handle.  I thought that my attending my class was confidential until  I read an email from a pastors husband that once again tried to pigeon hole me by suggesting that my crying foul and not tolerating abuse in my life was somehow “because of” my past!  The exact words were “she must have some significant damage in her past to react this way” It had been the story of my life to not speak out when I was hurt, to not demand respect and to take the abusive behavior from others as just another part of my life as if I deserved to be treated less then.  The impression that was transmitted openly in a not so private email was that this man felt that he knew who I was, because of a class that I was attending! God hit me at that moment like a Mac truck!  I was keenly aware that this type of reaction and careless assumption was the reason I had hidden for years, taking me off of my path and “shaming” me back into hiding and away from the blessings God had intended.  I saw it so clearly at that moment!  I was working so hard to not be “pigeon holed” that I was not the authentic person that God was trying so desperately to use for His purpose.

I made the decision that day that I would use my life and all of its facets to speak out and not hide any longer.  I would not allow anyone else to “tell” my story!  I could no longer allow another broken person to define “who I was” and just cower in the shadows.   I realized in that moment that women hide from their abuse because they believe they will not feel loved by anyone if they tell their story.  The ignorance in one email brought me to my knees before God, begging to be relieved from the pain of the secret that was snuffing out my life and the gifts that He had intended me to be blessed with!

You are loved, was the message that I had to accept and then I had to allow Him to use my story to reach out to others!

How can reading your book have an impact on the reader’s life?

My hope and prayer is that my life will encourage other women to be brave in his name!  I exposed my life because I was living in a way that  the world had designed and defined and not the life that God was working to use to restore others. I believe that His plan is to shed the light in the dark corners where we hide our deepest pain.  My book reveals pain and fear that can control and lead a life into desperation and isolation, destroying His purpose!  As you will read in the first page of You are Loved,  Surviving is my History, Living is my Destiny,  the impact will be that my readers will finally know and believe that they are loved and that they are worth it!

What are your plans for the future in the publishing world? Think you have any more books in you?

I am in the process of writing new book called EMBRACE.  This book is a culmination of all the steps it took for me to be the woman God intended.  Embracing your life and all of its facets is a process, this book will bring you full circle, through the pain of your life to the joy that the healing that God creates through that pain, teaching you to walk in His Embrace in order to lead others to His salvation!

What else does God have you doing these days Linda, and how can our readers connect with you?

Embrace Ministries is the passion of my life these days.  I am still writing Monday Morning Prayer and the Daily Light Switch. You can find me at www.embrace-ministries.net.  I am also on Face book at http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Gomes/1260573178#!/pages/You-Are-Loved/281441512624. My Review:

You are Loved! is not your typical memoir of a turbulent, abusive childhood.  Linda takes her life story and turns it around after finding Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Saviour.  Did it solve all her problems immediately?  No.  But she allowed God to grow her spiritually by listening to Him, obeying, and praying.

I was at first frustrated with the book, as I thought it was written chronologically.  Once I realized it contained stories from her life by subject, I was immediately engrossed in her book.  Yes, it’s a story about Linda’s life, but it’s a greater story of God’s deliverance to her broken heart.  I could so easily relate to some of the subjects that she tackles with Godly inspiration.

The hardest chapter is the initial one, A Child’s Journey, where Linda, as a little child, never felt the love of a parent,  never knew that God was really a part of her life, and followed those life patterns into her marriages.  This chapter captured me the most, as it hurdles you through the grim life she started out with and how it affected her relationships.

Linda doesn’t leave you without hope, however.  In finally surrendering to God’s will, He has used her mightily to minister to hurting women.  I found each of the remaining chapters to be devotionals that teaches the love of God in the midst of your struggles, of which Linda (and we all) has many.

Some of the chapters include the following:

  • The Gift
  • The Empty Nest
  • A Taste of Happiness
  • Surviving Fear
  • Giving, Taking, and Personal Responsibility
  • Companionship and Comfort
  • My Broken Chooser
  • Validating Like Jesus
  • The Way of Cain
  • Filtering Through the Heart
  • Waiting and the Art of War
  • A Family of Love
  • A Conduit for Christ
  • Forgiveness… and Letting Go
  • The Genesis Effect
  • The Harvest
  • plus many, many more.

Be encouraged with Linda’s book if you fall into the category of a dysfunctional upbringing.  She brings Scripture into the meanings of each chapter title, letting you know You Are Loved! and that God know every detail of your life.  God didn’t abandon her through all she went through.  And He redeemed her past, just like He can yours. Linda’s transparent prayers at the end of the chapters are an impetus for us to open up and pray.

Do I think this is a book just for women?  No.  There are many principles that apply to both men and women that have suffered abuse as a child.  Follow EMBRACE-Ministries(dot)net for more information.

Revell Blog Tour: “The Search” by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Love in Amish Country

Search, The: A Novel (Lancaster County Secrets)

A touching tale of secrets and young love in the Amish community, from the series that Romantic Times has called “refreshing.”

Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher has written extensively about the Amish, releasing both fiction and non-fiction books that have won the hearts of reviewers in both in and out of the Amish community. Now comes The Search, Fisher’s latest fiction novel in the Lancaster County Secrets series.

Book Blurb:

Fifteen years ago, Lainey O’Toole made a split-second decision. She couldn’t have known that her choice would impact so many. Now in her mid-twenties, she is poised to go to culinary school when her car breaks down in Stoney Ridge, the very Amish town in which her long-reaching decision was made, forcing her to face the shadowed past.

Bess Reihl is less than thrilled to be spending the summer at Rose Hill Farm with her large and intimidating grandmother, Bertha. It quickly becomes clear that she is there to work the farm—and work hard. The labor is made slightly more tolerable by the time it affords Bess to spend with the handsome hired hand, Billy Lapp. But he only has eyes for a flirty and curvaceous older girl.

Lainey’s and Bess’s worlds are about to collide and the secrets that come to light will shock them both.

Beautifully written, The Search is a skillfully woven story that takes readers through unexpected twists and turns on the long country road toward truth. Fans both old and new will find themselves immersed in this heartwarming—and surprising—tale of young love, forgiveness, and coming to grips with the past.

Image of "Suzanne Woods Fisher"Suzanne Woods Fisher is the CBA bestselling author of The ChoiceThe WaitingAmish Peace, and Amish Proverbs. Her interest in the Anabaptist cultures can be directly traced to her grandfather, W. D. Benedict, who was raised in the Old Order German Baptist Brethren Church in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Benedict eventually became publisher of Christianity Today magazine. Suzanne is the host of a radio show called Amish Wisdom and her work has appeared in many magazines. She lives in California.

My Review:

The Search, by Suzanne Woods Fisher, is my first introduction to Suzanne’s writings about the Amish.  I found her style refreshing, real, transparent, and unique.

Refreshing in the way she describes the scenes in such intricate detail, the raw emotions that spill out unexpectantly, and the guarded pain held deeply, pulling you into every experience.  Real in the way she portrays the many circumstances that could easily happen today, in just a slightly different fashion.  Transparent because you could ‘read’ Mammi’s facial expressions and body language, feel Bess’s attraction to Billy, and empathize with Jonah’s pain and tragedy.  Unique in how she draws out the strength of her characters in their own personal way, making them special and lovable.  At least most of them!

You learn how one widow makes a new life for herself that pulls in her love of roses and the ingenuity of a young man trying to establish himself in the eyes of his father.

The underlying secret Suzanne has running through the book has you on edge, wondering if or when it will be told, and how it will affect each character if it is exposed.  She weaves in the aspects of forgiveness and healing, which are essential in everyone’s life.   I am sure you will find this a heartwarming story that resonates throughout your own life.

Review: “Fear to Freedom” by Rosemary Trible

Fear to Freedom:   What if you did not have to be so afraid?

Rosemary Trible

ISBN: 978-1-935265-09-2/240 pages/$1495/February 2010

VMI Publishers

Does fear hold you back from living with freedom and confidence?  Does anxiety rob your joy?

Rosemary Trible was a successful young woman, a television talk-show host with a husband on his way to becoming a US Congressman, when she was savagely raped at gunpoint after her show on rape.  Even though she recovered physically, she found that her attacker had not only brutally violated her, he had stolen her joy and her ability to live without terror and fear.

Fear to Freedom provides practical tools from Rosemary’s own life and the transformed lives of others and discusses sexual assault, terror, forgiveness, and healing.  It’s about big dreams, the death of dreams, and becoming bold enough to dream again and make a difference in the world for good.

Rosemary’s story will elicit tears, but also laughter.  It’s easy to read, passionate and real.  It will appeal to people who are hungry for the presence of God.   It also features the stories of young women Rosemary has mentored through eating disorders, sexual violation, depression and bitterness, encouraging readers to begin their own healing process.

Rosemary, originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, has been married to Paul Trible since 1971.  They have two children, Mary Katherine Peters, a marketing executive married to Barrett Peters, who is pursuing his degree in dentistry, and Paul III, who has completed his MBA at Oxford University and is starting his own business, Ledbury, custom men’s shirts.  On top of the list of answered prayers is a new grandbaby on the way!  Visit www.feartofreedomjourney.com for additional infomation.

My Review:

Other than some differences in theology, Fear to Freedom is one very personal biography of Rosemary Trible’s brutal rape which she allowed God to turn to healing,  and then turns the rape incident around and decidedly reaches out to really help women turn their issues over to God.  I enjoyed Rosemary’s transparency, her personal insights,  steps to forgiveness,  ‘journey to joy’ section, and her in-depth devotional guide.  She hits all the steps of healing.  I found her book very sensitive and personal.  I can feel her heart for women throughout the whole book.  For that, I give her book a very high rating and recommendation.

This book was provided by Paula Krapf, Chief Operating Officer, at Author Marketing Experts, Inc., for my honest review of Fear to Freedom.  My thanks.
